Lighting Source

Once the lighting system has been designed, a list of suitable lamps should be made. The suitability of the lamp will depend on the nature of the task in the work place.
Lamp selection should be based on the following factors:
  1. Is good colour rendering required either for accurate performance of the task or the aesthetic appearance of the area being illuminated?
  2. Does the task require rapid provision of lighting? If the answer is yes, then most discharge lamps should be avoided as they need a run up time.
  3. Lamp life and luminous efficiency must be considered. If luminaries are difficult to access then lamps required regular maintenance will be inappropriate.
  4. Stroboscopic effects should be avoided if the work place has movement machinery.
  5. The degree and accuracy of light control required for the task must be assessed. It is easier to control light from a small compact light source than a large one. The type of luminaires available must also be taken into account.

Luminaire

The following factors must be assessed regarding the work place and the specific task before a luminaire can be selected:
  1. Environmental conditions; Does the luminaire have to withstand vibration, moisture, dust and extremes of temperature? Such factors must be taken into consideration i.e. the luminaire must operate safely in the environmental conditions of the work place. The luminaires are classified according to the type of protection against electric shock, the degree of protection against dust and moisture and according to material of the supporting surface for which the luminaire is designed.
  2. The utilization factor; The utilization factor of the luminaire and the luminous efficacy of lamp will allow the efficacy of the installation to be calculated. This is a measure of the amount of luminous flux that reaches the work plane for each watt of power supplied. The luminaires all ranked according to the installed efficacy, so the most efficient may be chosen.
  3. Other factors; Light distribution of luminaires, luminaire life, reliability and the ease of maintenance should also be considered.
