After correcting her refractive error, she asked me for some tips that could help improve her vision and eye health. Therefore I decided to highlight some tips that have proven helpful in the improvement of vision and eye health. The tips include the following:
- Firstly, you should make sure that any refractive error or any other medical condition that might reduce vision is properly treated or managed. If you are not sure whether you have refractive error, please visit an optometrist to confirm.
- The paramount and most proven way to improve vision and eye health is to eat a balanced nutritious diet. You should eat foods rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, C and E such foods include carrot, nuts, green leafy vegetables, apples, beans, fish etc.
- You should always ensure that there is adequate tear production because tears lubricate the eyes and when they are not adequate (dry eye), hazy vision will set in.
- Always blink frequently to prevent your eyes from drying up.
- Prolonged use of computer, phones, e-reader, tablets etc causes eye irritation (dry eye, itchy eyes, red eyes), blurred vision, eyestrain, headache, backaches, neck aches, muscle fatigue (computer vision syndrome). Therefore when working with these devices, you are advised to look away from them every 20 minutes. For more information on how your computer and phones affect your eyes click here.
- You should quit smoking, if you’re already smoking or do not start smoking if you’re a non-smoker. This is because smoking reduces blood flow to the small blood vessels in the eyes and in addition, it causes cataract as well.
- Always wear sunglasses especially when you’re out in the sun, dusts and wind because these conditions are the risk factors of developing cataract and pterygium, hence wearing sunglasses prevents early development of cataract and pterygium.
- If you work in a company or industry were harmful chemicals that causes damage to the eyes are used or released, you need to get a protective eye-gear and wear it whenever you are at work. Also it is essential to wear protective eye-gear during some sport activities such as skiing, swimming etc.
- Exercise your eyes by rotating them in the clockwise and anticlockwise direction alternatively especially in the morning or any time your eyes are strained.
- Always get enough sleep especially when you are tired because sleep rejuvenates the eyes.
