In the past the safety of the employee was normally
considered to be the employee’s responsibility and little liability was placed
upon the employer. However, in more recent years the trend has been reversed
and the employer is primarily responsible for the safety of the employees. This
is where we come in, our job is to help reduce the number of eye injuries in
industries, minimize stress on the visual system and identify visual
disabilities by setting up Eye Protection and Vision Screening Programmes.
Introduction of eye protection programme for employees in especially the
mechanical and engineering departments will lead to at least 78.4% reduction in
eye injuries over the next three years and by carrying out vision screening
programme, the following advantages can be achieved:
- Visual ability can be used in the selection of new employees or the transfer of an employee to a task they can perform efficiently.
- Identification of employees with visual disabilities which may be due to an uncorrected refractive error or ocular pathology. If the visual problems cannot be corrected then the employee can be transferred to a task they would be capable of performing efficiently.
- Improvement of visual efficiency through vision screening can result in increased productivity, fewer accidents and reduced absenteeism.
- Compensation of claims can be settled more easily.
The general purpose of any vision screening programme is to
detect those people who have defective vision but who do not present with
symptoms that result in them seeking attention. Every occupation has specific
visual requirement that must be met to perform tasks efficiently, safely and
with comfort. Therefore, our aim here is to detect those people whose visual
ability is below the standard required. For instance, vision screening is
commonly used to identify young children with defective vision which can affect
their progress at school.
We also play an important educative and clinical role in the
provision of eye protection. Advice can be given regarding the visual abilities
and safety of the employees in relation to the particular job requirements.
Assessing the working conditions, the work place, the tasks involved and where
necessary, making recommendations for improvement are also part of our job.
Apart from carrying out eye protection and vision screening
programmes for companies, industries and other institution, we also carry out
sponsored vision screening programmes for philanthropists, politicians, etc.
This type of vision screening is performed in any area (usually villages,
communities, orphanage homes, etc) chosen by our sponsor(s). In this aspect of
vision screening, we will play two major roles. Firstly, we will enlighten the
people about the domestic and non-domestic
activities, lifestyles, foods,
etc. that can be hazardous to the visual system. We will encourage them to
undergo an eye examination at least once every year by an optometrist.
The second part is the vision screening proper, were we
examine their eyes for disabilities, carry out some necessary tests and provide
solution in form of spectacles, drugs, advice, etc.
